Part 1: Echo

Top Talent at Equidays

Part of our Top Talent performance at Equidays required me to come up with a theme, costume and music.

When I was kid I had a great imagination, fancy dress with my pony were my forte. I came up with all sorts of themes with ease....how many walking fruit stalls have you seen in the fancy dress competition? lol :D I did that one year with Echo. I put my costumes together myself and it was really the only class I could potentially win a ribbon in.

Its been a number of years since then though, and when it came to my Top Talent theme I was well and truly stumped! I thought about what I would be doing...horsemanship and that's where I got stuck.

Thinking, thinking...I drifted off and thought about my lovely horse Briar Rose. Oh how great it would be if she were still alive....she would have been amazing in the competition. Briar passed away suddenly in March this year, so it is bittersweet as I would have loved to involve her in this. I thought about how everything I would be doing in my performance, were things I had learned first with Briar.

Briar was a gentle and kind horse. You would never see her grumpy and I don't think I appreciated at the time just how generous she was. I taught myself liberty, it wasn't the information age, you couldn't google how to do things back in those days. She weathered my mistakes and experiments with such grace. She filled in for me when my feel and timing missed the mark. And when I got things right, she just melted with such beautiful softness. .I remember heading off one day with the purpose being to teach her to lie down. I was set to be in for the day, I don't know why, I just thought it would be hard. Half an hour later with Briar sitting down beside me I remember pulling my brick sized cell phone out and ringing mum full of Whoopee's!!! :D

We did a lot of demo's over the years but one of my favourate things was out in the paddock, to give her the signal and she would come trotting out of the herd for a cuddle.

Yes Briar was an amazing horse, and gave me a lot of what I am investing into my other horses with less mistakes, more understanding and a desire to preserve their dignity and spirit. With that I had my theme....

Remembering Briar Rose...

It certainly gives some feeling to the performance for me, and when Maverick, Zefir and I head into the arena, I will be carrying Briar in my heart <3
